This page from The Twits is seared, viscerally into my consciousness from my childhood. It was a truth that I swallowed whole, in one great gulp.
I found a copy in my local library’s resale section and delightedly bought it, ready to pass on the experience to my own nippers.
I already love to read to my kids (although, in the case of my youngest it is more like a wrestling match with hurried flashes of board book pages) but I am reallyreally looking forward to the fodder of the next few years; Swallows and Amazons, Five Children and It, The Chronicles of Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Wind in the Willows….what children’s novels would you recommend?

Hannah Stoney is a British artist and writer.
You’ve recommended some of my favorites. I also very much love The Velveteen Rabbit, The Giving Tree, Oscar Wilde’s “The Selfish Giant”, Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp.
Dahl’s Matilda was my favourite. And Danny the Champion of the world. Also Shirley Hughes ‘My naughtily little sister’ but that was probably because I was one!
Little House on the Prairie! Indispensable.
